Creating inclusive elearning experiences is crucial for workforce development, especially in industries with diverse skills and backgrounds. However, finding representative images and voices is often a challenge. Traditional stock images and voiceovers often lack the authenticity needed to resonate with a broad audience and this gap can make it difficult to craft learning experiences that truly connect with every learner.
The Challenge of Representation in Elearning
Endurance Learning faced this challenge when developing training for the aviation industry. Our goal was to showcase the wide range of career paths, from hands-on roles in maintenance and avionics to operational jobs on the tarmac and leadership positions in training and safety. We wanted learners to see themselves in these positions, sparking a sense of belonging and possibility. However, images and voices that truly reflected the industry’s diversity proved difficult to find.
Traditional stock photo libraries fell short, lacking variety in uniforms, ethnicities, genders, and physical abilities in realistic aviation settings. It was clear we needed a fresh approach to bring our vision of inclusive elearning to life.
Maximizing Inclusivity in Rapid Elearning Development
AI-Generated Elearning Images
AI-powered image generation tools allowed for the creation of custom visuals that represent the full diversity of the workforce. With these tools, we were able to:
- Generate high-quality, unique images featuring individuals of diverse ages, racial backgrounds, and gender identities in authentic aviation settings.
- Customize visuals to meet specific training needs, like showcasing a female avionics technician or a wheelchair user in an air traffic control tower.
- Break free from generic stock imagery that often feels disconnected from real-world experiences.

AI-Generated Voices for Elearning
AI voice synthesis is also revolutionizing eLearning narration. With AI-generated voices, organizations can:
- Offer a range of accents, dialects, and languages that reflect a global workforce.
- Tailor narration styles to fit specific roles and contexts, such as an authoritative air traffic controller or a warm, welcoming onboarding guide.
- Streamline audio production for quicker updates and iterations of training content.

Personalized Career Pathways: Putting Learners in Control
Our career training aimed to empower learners with choice, allowing them to explore a range of potential career paths based on their interests. To accomplish this, we:
- Offered dynamic, learner-driven pathways featuring different career tracks, each with authentic voices and images reflecting aviation’s diverse workforce.
- Allowed for learner choice throughout the module without forcing them into any specific pathway. They could return to a career map table of contents at any point and dig deeper into information about any career of their choice.

The Future of Inclusive Elearning
Integrating AI-generated images and voices into online career training goes beyond efficiency. It was about creating meaningful, inclusive elearning experiences that inspire the next generation of professionals.
By leveraging AI in this way, instructional designers can ensure that learners see themselves in the fields they are exploring, promoting a more diverse and representative workforce.
