Each year, Jane Hart of the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies (C4LPT) compiles a list of the top technology-based tools for learning. Late last week, she published the list for 2019.

What’s new?
If you’re anything like me, the daily grind of emails and deliverables prevents me from picking my head up as often as I’d like in order to see what’s new in the world of learning and development. That means I could be missing out on new tools to boost my own knowledge, skills or productivity. This list is a nice compilation of tools that other learning professionals are using, and it’s organized so that it’s easy to find what kinds of tools have hit the market over the past year that like-minded professionals have found useful.

What am I not using?
Beyond the tools that have started to trend over the past year, this list is helpful to me when I use it to identify technologies and tools that have been proven over a number of years, yet I haven’t taken the time to try them out.
Over the past several years, this list has introduced me to the following tools that have become staples in many of the training programs and workshops that I facilitate:
- Kahoot
- PollEverywhere
- PowToon
How do I fit in?
This list also provides some affirmation that I’m not a complete Luddite. The top 10 tools on the list (YouTube, Google Search, PowerPoint, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Docs & Drive, Word, Wikipedia, WordPress and Zoom) are all tools that I use week in and week out. I’m also using 29 of the top 50 tools in some fashion.
Using tools just because they’re cool technologies isn’t the point here. I think the main value in a list like this is that it can offer a curated list of tools that thousands of other learning professional found useful. Next time you’re looking for a videoconferencing platform or a team collaboration tool or a photo editing tool or an animation tool, this list can provide all sorts of ideas from some of the most popularly used applications.
